Recycle Christmas Cards – Shimmering Ornaments

You don’t have to throw out your beautiful Christmas cards, or stuff them in a box where they’ll never again see the light of day.  Here’s a way to spend a relaxing evening recycling those memorable beauties.

What you’ll need:

  • Christmas cards
  • 3”-3.5”-diameter circle to trace (I used a disposable plastic cup)
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Rubber cement
  • Ribbon (I used curling ribbon, but thin cloth ribbon would be nicer)
  • Beads
  • Glitter glue
  1. Trace circles on cards.  Don’t forget to look for interesting patterns on the inside or back of the cards.
  2. Cut out circles.  You’ll need 6 circles for each ornament.
  3. Fold them in half, folding the color side inward.
  4. Brush back sides with rubber cement.  Let dry.
  5. Tie a loop (about 3” long) in a 12” length of ribbon.
  6. Attach the ribbon on the back of one circle, closely along the fold (see photo).
  7. Fasten 2 circles together, with ribbon inside.
  8. Continue fastening remaining 4 circles together.
  9. Feed bottom end of ribbon into a bead(s).
  10. Trim or curl bottom end of ribbon.
  11. Hold ornament and carefully line edges with glitter glue.  (You don’t have to do it perfectly; look for overall effect.)
